Because Every Young Player Deserves a Chance to Play

The James Harpur Player Support Fund was created in memory of one of our own — a young man whose love for football and the Eagles still echoes through our club today.

James was just 18 when his life was tragically cut short in a car accident. He was part of the Letchworth Garden City Eagles family, and his passing deeply affected everyone who knew him. Determined to keep his spirit alive and do something meaningful in his name, James’s brother and sister, along with their family, set up a fund to support other young players who might otherwise miss out.

⚽ A Legacy That Lives On

The fund began with memorial matches, where teammates, friends, and the local community came together to raise money for a cause James would have stood behind. From those early events, the fund has grown into a permanent part of the Eagles, helping dozens of young people stay involved in grassroots football.

At its heart is a simple idea: no child should be denied the chance to play because of cost. Whether it’s membership fees, kit, or travel expenses, the James Harpur Fund exists to remove financial barriers and make sure football is accessible to every family.

Each season, families can apply for support with:

• • Annual subscriptions

• • Kit or equipment costs

• • Other football-related expenses

Applications are handled confidentially, and decisions are made by a small panel including the Club Welfare Officer and an independent member, ensuring fairness, privacy, and dignity.

Whether you’re facing a short-term challenge or need longer-term support, the fund is here to help—especially for families with more than one child at the club.

Thanks to ongoing donations, fundraising events, and the tireless efforts of James’s family, the fund continues to make a real difference. It’s not just financial support—it’s a message that every player matters, and that they’re part of something bigger.

Each child helped by the fund is another tribute to James: his passion, his team spirit, and his place in our club’s story.

📩 How to Apply

If you’d like to apply for support, simply download the application form here and complete with the requested information, including:

• The player’s name and team
• Contact details for a parent or guardian
• A brief outline of the support requested and supporting information
• Whether any siblings also play for the club

 

Applications are reviewed with care and in confidence by the Harpur Fund Administration Team.  Successful applications will be processed by the Eagles Treasurer in accordance with the support awarded.

 

A new application must be submitted each season.
